Hey

This has to be said,

I paint about 10 originals a year. Maybe less.

I give everything to each one, full focus, full energy, months of my life. So deciding what to paint is almost as important as the painting itself.

I've passed on subjects that could have gone super viral because I didn't feel it. And I've lost sleep over subjects that wouldn't leave me alone until they were finished.

Saint Michael wouldn't leave me alone.

A friend sent me something this week that stopped me cold. He wrote about Kintsugi, the ancient Japanese practice of repairing broken pottery with gold.

When a bowl shatters, the craftsman doesn't discard it or hide the cracks. He traces every fracture with gold, making the break itself the most luminous part of the piece. The repaired vessel is considered more beautiful than the original

not despite its brokenness,

but because of it.

Each original start broken, blank, shapeless. I slowly fill in and try my best to make it whole. I concentrate on what I can do and then God does the rest.

He fills in the Cracks with Gold.

These originals are collected and put in sacred spaces around the world.
